Breastfeeding offers a baby closeness, affection and tailored nutrition: for the majority of babies, breast milk alone is exactly the right nutrition for the first 6 months of life.
Even afterwards, when the child is fed complementary foods, it can and should continue to be breastfed for as long as mother and child wish.
Your baby can drink as often as it wants.
8-12 feeds are normal – this is the only way to stimulate milk production.
Your baby can drink for as long as it wants.
A meal can last up to 45 minutes.
Many babies want to be breastfed several times at short intervals in the evening.
Milk production is stimulated more and as a result there is usually a longer sleep phase.
You still have enough milk.
Your baby has had enough when it is happy and the weight gain is right.
Breastfeeding mothers have an increased need for energy and fluids.
Drink a glass of water every time you breastfeed.
For detailed information, see “Nutrition during breastfeeding”.
A engorged breast is difficult for a baby to wean off.
Therefore, above all, take your time and rest and feed your baby often (approx. every 1.5 to 2 hours) in different breastfeeding positions.
Irritated nipples in the first few days are normal.
Pain, however, indicates that the baby is hurting the nipple while sucking.
Do not endure any pain, but get help immediately.

In the beginning, your baby should be given a bottle by a few caregivers.
Offer your baby plenty of skin contact when feeding.
Always hold your baby in your arms and alternate the position between your right and left arm.
This will prevent one-sidedness in your child’s development.
With a new thermos flask, you always have hot, boiled water!
